Geachte heer, mevrouw,
Mijn 14-jarige zoon heeft een droom: werken bij dé scheepswerf in onze woonplaats.
Zo’n 4 weken geleden heeft hij alle moed verzameld om met een CV en motivatiebrief onder zijn arm, bloednerveus op de fiets te stappen om dit bij jullie af te geven. Het was zoeken voor hem daar op het bedrijventerrein; waar is de receptie, wie moet ik aanspreken, maar ook wat trek ik aan en wat zal ik zeggen als ik daar ben? Het was net na vieren en een vriendelijke medewerker vertelde in het Engels dat hij de volgende dag terug moest komen, wel voor 16 uur hoor, want dan is de receptie nog open.
De volgende dag was iets makkelijker. Hij kende de weg al en wist nu waar de receptie was. Bij de receptie heeft hij gevraagd naar de ‘HR afdeling’. De receptioniste wist alleen niet wat hij bedoelde, maar een aardige man ving het gesprek op, heeft na een babbeltje het CV en de brief in ontvangst genomen en toegezegd dat hij volgende week iets zou horen op zijn open sollicitatie.
Vol adrenaline en enorm hoopvol kwam hij thuis, wachtend op een bericht. 1 week voorbij, 2 weken voorbij…niets. Maar niet opgeven! Misschien was het daar druk. Dus heeft hij een mail gestuurd, met de brief en het CV, dat hij was langs geweest voor een sollicitatie, dat hij bericht zou krijgen, maar nog niets had gehoord. Of hij kan komen werken in de meivakantie? 1 week voorbij, 2 weken voorbij…geen reactie.
Maar hij geeft nog nÃet op. 3 x scheepsrecht, om maar in de termen te blijven. Zojuist is hij weer op de fiets gestapt met CV onder zijn arm richting jullie scheepswerf.
Hij belde zojuist. Er was niemand bij de receptie. Er waren wel wat mensen in de loods aan het werk en die zagen hem niet. Hij heeft daar minuten gezocht naar iemand. Niet gelukt. Hij is weer op de fiets onderweg naar huis, terwijl ik dit bericht ondertussen schrijf. Hij gaat het volgende week nog één keer proberen, zegt ie, echt de allerlaatste keer, het was nu vrijdag en de receptie is misschien eerder dicht. Dan gaat ie maandag nog één keer. En dan is het voor hem klaar, dan gaat hij het ergens anders proberen, zegt hij.
Teleurstellingen horen nou eenmaal bij het leven en het is belangrijk om daarmee te leren omgaan. Op zijn vraag of het ‘altijd zo is dat je helemaal niets meer hoort als je solliciteert en je dan bent afgewezen?’ moet ik helaas bevestigend antwoorden. Dat gebeurt. Best wel vaak ook. Welkom in de grote mensen wereld.
Maar weet u, ook al is het bericht niet wat hij wil horen, dan krijgt hij wél een bericht. Helemaal niets vernemen is veel erger. Dat wachten op bericht. En hij zal in het leven nog zoveel solliciteren, met goeie en slechte ervaringen, maar ik hoopte voor hem dat -ook al was het slecht nieuws- dat hij dan tóch positief terug zou kunnen kijken op zijn allereerste echte sollicitatie-ervaring. Want hij kreeg in ieder geval bericht.
